Your eyes like reflections of the moon,
Lighting even the darkest of moments
Your smiles like the trail of falling stars,
Alighting with wonder and hope
Your touch like rays of Sunshine,
Bringing warmth and happiness
Your mind like an expanding galaxy,
Endlessly beautiful, endlessly astonishing
My heart like an empty void,
If you had never come into my life
My fears like far off asteroids,
Forgotten when you’re by my side
For you are my whole world,
The air that fills my lungs,
The water that keeps me going
For I can do nothing but gravitate to you,
To keep my feet on the ground,
To keep me standing
For you are the center of my universe

Inspiration for the Poem:
The inspiration for this poem, as is the inspiration for every love poem I have ever written, was my wife Eme, whose food and movie pairings you may have seen on this very blog. While this is not my favorite poem for her that I have written, it holds a special place in my heart as it was the first. I was working in retail at the time, and we had just married. In the break room I wrote this poem down on the notes app of my phone, transferred it to an actual document when I arrived home, and printed it out for her by the time she arrived home from her job as a barista. I look back on this poem and though I see changes I would make with word choice and though my style as a poet has certainly changed, I cannot bring myself to change much due to the fact that what is said is only more true now than when I first wrote it. I did make slight changes from the original due to aspects that simply could not be ignored, but nothing substantial was edited. I hope you have enjoyed the first of many poems to be posted over the coming months, and thank you for reading.
